There are basically 2 hostels in Alleppey that I think you should consider taking a look at.
And then there’s one more guesthouse that I think you should also consider for a nice experience in Alleppey – kind of a hostel in the sense that there’s a shared sleeping space and common area, so it’s basically an oceanside rooftop hostel!
If you choose any of the listed places to stay in Alleppey, there’s a good chance you’ll leave Alleppey with happy feelings!

1. Zostel Alleppey hostel
Zostel is a chain of backpacker’s hostels in India, and there are a couple of Zostel hostels in Kerala.
It’s located on a small road, and once you cross that road, you’re on sand!
There’s also Cafe Catamaran that’s just a 10 second walk from Zostel where you can go for a tea, smoothie, or meal.
They sometimes have live music at this cafe in the evenings. So when you get in to Alleppey, check to see if there’s anything going on when you’ll be there.
At this hostel, you can also get ocean views from the rooftop and lay in a hammock for some rest too.
There’s a common area on the ground floor that makes for a good way to meet people.
There’s also a kitchen so you can make your own food.
The room with the dorm beds comes with AC, and they have private rooms too. This can make it nice if you want to meet people but still have the privacy of your own room.
Whether you go for the dorm beds or the private room, you have the sunset on the ocean that’s just seconds away from where you’re staying!

2. Artpackers hostel
Artpackers is another hostel in Alleppey worth considering.
This isn’t as close to Alleppey Beach as Zostel is, so if you’re going for beach vibes, Zostel would be better.
But Artpackers is still pretty close to the beach, maybe about a 5 minute walk.
This will get you to the main part of Alleppey Beach which means that there’s also more of a variety of restaurants and places to eat near you. (The beach area near Zostel is further away from the main part.)
Artpackers is also good for overall vibes and has a nice common area that also makes it a good place to meet people.
This hostel has both dorm beds and private rooms as well.
If it’s your first time booking on airbnb, use my referral link to sign up, and you’ll get up to US$40 off a future airbnb booking. There’s a minimum requirement in order to use the discount, so unless you’re staying at Artpackers for over a week you won’t be able to use it when you stay here. But you’ll be able to use it on another booking later!

Guesthouse: Funky Art Beach House
Funky Art Beach House is another place that you should totally consider if you’re traveling Alleppey on a budget.
There are private rooms here, as well as a shared sleeping area.
It’s not a hostel in the traditional sense that you may typically think of, but there’s a shared space on the rooftop, and an outdoor common area down below.
This is located right by the beach.
By staying here, you can basically sleep outdoors on a rooftop and wake up to ocean views!
Consider it a bit of outdoor living in India!

Tip: It says female-only dorm is available, but it actually means it’s for travelers (not locals), so if you’re a foreigner guy you can still reserve a bed!

How to book India train tickets online as a foreignerIf you don't want to go through the complicated process of setting up an IRCTC Indian railways account as a foreigner...
Then the most convenient way to buy train tickets online is through this booking website. I've used it, and it's super simple! You buy the ticket, and then show the electronic version on your phone once you're on the train. Compared to buying directly through an Indian ticket booking website (IRCTC account required) or directly at the train station in India, there is a small convenience fee, as well as a less flexible cancellation policy, though!
India tourist visa tip!Access to India as a foreigner seems to be getting friendlier! There's an e-visa now and this visa fee is far less than it was before. See the current cost of an e-visa by selecting your country. That's a partner website to make the evisa application process less stressful - it's possible to apply on your own too. See about your options on how to get an e-visa for India.
Travel insurance for India - just in case! You get travel insurance hoping that you'll never have to use it. But if you do end up needing to use it, chances are that you will be VERY happy that you did get it! See how to figure out the cost of travel insurance for India.
