I think a day trip to Marari Beach is among the best day trips from Alleppey that involves the beach!
It might sound corny, but for me, the best part of going to Marari Beach was the journey!!
You can walk from Alleppey to Marari Beach pretty much the entire way along the coast!
This means amazing ocean views.
You might walk on the beach.
You might walk on a dirt path.
You might walk on a small road.
And if you’re not able to walk directly along the coast, you’ll be able to find short detours, sometimes on residential streets.
Although it will be hot, for the best views, I say go when it’s sunny out!
Just be sure to bring water, as you’ll have to walk “inland” in order to find any shops.
That’s how secluded this can feel!
Along the way, you might see long stretches of beach with no people.
And the people you do see will be local fishermen who are hanging out.

You might see a bunch of happy locals too.
You’ll also pass by a number of local fishermen beaches.
And you might pass some seemingly secluded beach areas too.
There are also a number of areas where the river meets the sea, and basically this might require a river crossing.
So in these cases be prepared to take off your shoes or sandals for the crossing if you’re not wearing the type of travel sandals that will allow you to make such river crossings as is.
And, when you’re traveling around Kerala, another nice long coastal walk is from Varkala to Kappil Beach! It’s not a beach walk, but you’ll get ocean views basically the whole way too!
How to get to Marari Beach from Alleppey
So I have walked to Marari Beach from Alleppey, and I have also gone cycling to Marari Beach from Alleppey.
The day I walked to Marari Beach, I took a bus back to Alleppey from the main road.
I think walking is the best way to get there because it’s the only way you’ll get the coastal views nearly the whole way!
It is like 10km though, so consider it a beach trek in Kerala! (Kind of like how you can do a beach trek in Gokarna if you’re doing a one month South India trip.)
Or, if that’s too much for you, even just starting to walk in the direction of Marari could offer you nice views. You can then just turn around when you’re starting to feel like it’s getting long. Or, you can walk “inland” to the main road (it won’t be that far from the coast) to find a bus back to Alleppey, or maybe a rickshaw too if you’re at a main intersection. (It would be best to find a local to ask about these things when you’re ready to go back.)
I started my beach walk from this guesthouse which is also worth considering staying at if you want beach vibes in Kerala. It’s basically a stay among locals in a residential neighborhood.
The second and third best options for getting to Marari from Alleppey I think are cycling and renting a scooter.
Bicycle rentals in Alleppey are hard to come by though, so this could make renting a scooter a little bit of a better option.
Both bicycle and scooter means that you’ll have to stick to the main road.
But by having your own transport, it means you’re free to go where you want when you want.
So as you’re riding along the main road from Alleppey to Marari, any time you see a road to the left (towards the beach), take that road, and see where it takes you!
This can also get you to see some smaller fishermen beaches.
Maybe you can pick one of the roads, park your scooter (or bicycle) and go for short walks along the beach this way too.
Rickshaw and bus are also options to get to Marari Beach from Alleppey too.
These are less flexible though, and you’ll miss out on the more secluded parts along the way.
Although, you could try to arrange with a rickshaw a half-day thing and then tell him where you want to go. This could allow you to go down the random streets you find and stop off at the various coastal areas.
The bus ride will be about 15 rupees ($0.20).
And then for ultimate comfort, you can also get a taxi to Marari Beach.
What can you see with a walk from Alleppey to Marari Beach?!
