The main islands of Hawaii are Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai.
Here are some quick reasons why the North Shore on the Hawaiian island of Oahu really is the PERFECT place to learn surfing
1. The North Shore is internationally known for surfing
In the winter is when the North Shore waves REALLY come alive.
Just look at the Banzai pipeline.
The North Shore is known as one of the top surfing spots in the world, and you can find world-class surf competitions here.
And while you might not be ready for those massive waves, it still means that by getting your beginner surf lessons on Oahu, you’re learning in one of the most epic surf spots in the world.
2. You’ll be away from the main tourist spot of Hawaii
While Oahu is a well-visited Hawaiian island, the North Shore is a bit of a drive from Waikiki, which is the main tourist hot spot on Oahu.
This means that even though Hawaii is very much a tourist destination, you’ll feel it less by being on the North Shore.
That said, there are still plenty of tourists that visit the North Shore, but most just make day trips there!
3. You can spot turtles
Hawaii is known for being able to spot turtles and there’s a beach that’s called Turtle Beach right on the North Shore.
You can often find turtles just laying there in the sun!
And you know that there are also amazing beaches all over Oahu.
4. You can go for a hike with amazing views
There are amazing hikes all over Oahu, and you can find one right on the North Shore too with the Ehukai pillbox hike that starts around an elementary school near Sunset Beach.
5. You can bike with ocean views
Rent a bike and you can go for a coastal bike ride every day!
6. It’s the cheapest Hawaiian island
In the case that you want to extend your stay in Hawaii and stay a few extra days, or arrive a few days early, Oahu can be the cheapest of the Hawaiian island to do so.
It doesn’t necessarily have the cheapest flight to Hawaii (it’s possible to find deals to Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and possibly even the Big Island), but for “cheap” hotels and public transportation, it’ll likely be the best island for saving money.
When your surf camp is over, you can find a few cheap surf hostels on the North Shore, although to be honest, the reviews for these aren’t always the best. But if you’re just looking for a place to lay your head at night and be out all day, it could work out!
7. It’s Hawaii
Well, it probably wasn’t necessary to give all the other reasons, but you know.
And, Duke Kahanamoku (statue in picture above) is also the Hawaiian legend who is said to have popularized surfing in Hawaii. He’s been called the “father of modern surfing.”
If you need an excuse to go to Hawaii, surf camp really is the PERFECT excuse!
Also note… there is also a “North Shore” on Maui, which actually is also known as a surf spot!
